Mark I is the originating study in the Make a Mark series — an intuitive exploration of gesture, immediacy, and the emotional charge carried within a single movement.
Constructed through rapid, unrevised brushwork, the piece resists precision in favour of responsiveness. The marks oscillate between delicacy and force, creating a visual rhythm that feels simultaneously playful, unstable, and deliberate. Areas of dry brush and exposed texture preserve the physical evidence of contact, allowing the act itself to remain visible rather than concealed beneath refinement.
Rather than functioning as symbolic language with fixed meaning, the gestures operate more like traces of internal movement — fragments suspended between calligraphy, motion, and instinct. The work investigates how abstraction can communicate tension and presence without relying on representation, narrative, or resolution.
As the first study in the series, Mark I establishes the foundational premise of Make a Mark: that a gesture, when made honestly and without overcorrection, can contain its own form of psychological truth.
