Noctiluca

Project type

Oil painting

Date

2026

Australia

Noctiluca marks a movement toward restraint within the practice — a shift away from density and toward articulation through space.

The work is constructed through a singular, continuous gesture that extends, fragments, and reforms across the surface. Rather than building toward a fixed image, the composition follows the motion of the hand itself — a line that searches, hesitates, and resolves in real time.

Set against an open ground, the form is allowed to breathe. Negative space is not passive, but active — holding tension, directing movement, and shaping the presence of the mark as much as the mark defines it.

The interplay between violet and gold establishes a dialogue between fluidity and structure — between something that seeks definition and something that resists containment. Elements emerge, dissolve, and reappear without closure, leaving the composition suspended in a state of becoming.

The work does not aim to fill the canvas, but to test how little is required to sustain presence.

Within the broader trajectory of the practice, Noctiluca signals an expansion of language — introducing lightness, openness, and a different mode of attention. It does not replace what came before, but extends it.
